Who,s Mellow A?
Born and raised in good old Birmingham, United Kingdom, i was brought up on reggae, as my elder brother was a original 70,s English rastaman and my 1st experience of music was of the " home made " sound systems from back in the day. I developed a love, and still have , a love of Roots Rock Steppers / Toasting and Lovers rock. From the age of 14 i was a " box boy " for Rebel High powa and used to follow Quaker city and pre- Soca Studio city. After leaving school, i would spend my YTS money on going outernational and following Coxsone.
About this time the big thing was disco, and i like nearly everybody else was jumping on this band wagon.
This was done in "secret" to begin with, as i didn,t want to be seen as a " baldhead" though it wasn,t long before all nations was on this tip. The next 5 years would be spent buying Roots/Lovers and Soul/Disco. About this time the big thing also was Blues/allnighters for Reggae and alldayers for the Soul. It wasn,t unusual to do a allnighter on the Saturday, then get a few hours kip and then travel to a alldayer. The only plus point was that the best alldayers tended to be on my doorstep in Birmingham centre. I was also doing my catering apprenticeship at this time as well.....
My 1st Dj break came when a old school friend said he was starting up a pirate radio station, which was a new thing at the time, as i,d only heard of 1 other which came and went within a few weeks. The station was Metro fm. My music selection was Steppers and Lovers rock with a sprinkling of some unheard of Soul thrown into the mix and my Dj name was Twix ( school nickname )The station was on for 6 months .
At the begining of the 90,s i made the trip down to London permanently. This was the begining of another deep love. At this time the big thing down there was Rare Grooves, the type of music i was playing a few years back, only it wasn,t known as Rare Grooves at the time. This is where i must give props to Double O ( The Master ), Andy B, Nigel B, Mistri, Desi G/ Barry White, Juice Experience and all the rest of the apprentices doing their thing at the time. My time down there was 4 years, yet it will stay with me for a lifetime.
Upon my return back to Birmingham, i heard of a station starting up and joined what was to be known as Unity fm. This turned out to be a very successful station and enjoyed 3 good years there. In between various jobs, i have dropped tunes on Supreme fm, Vibes fm, Flava fm, Pcrl, Sweet fm and City limits.
Over the last 3 years, i,d decided to take a step away from underground radio and concentrate on the promoting side. I,ve been lucky enough to have worked with the likes of Alexander O,Neal, Jocelyn Brown, Kenny Thomas, Noel McCoy and loads of up and coming new talent.
After Noel McCoy tonight, Georgie B will be performing live from the Soulsteppers in Birmingham tonightContinue
